Meadowside Leisure Centre – 7th June 2019
On Friday 7th June the Annual Local Schools Swimming Gala took place at the Meadowside Leisure Centre. Burton Amateur Swimming Club annually invite all local schools to compete in a gala for years 3 to 6 with all races over 25m – one length of the pool.
Each age group take part in 25m races for boys and girls over freestyle, breast and back events, plus two girls and 2 boys combine for a free relay. In addition the year 6 children take part in a 25m fly race. Children are allowed to only swim in their own age group and can do a maximum of 2 individual races. The night ends with the very noisy cannon – where 8 kids from each school representing each age group battle it out for the final points available on the night.
This year we had 5 schools taking part on the evening :-
This year’s event was sponsored by Burton Round Table – the top 3 in each event received a medal and they all had smiles on their faces as they received the gold, silver and bronze awards.
This year the club decided to run the event to raise money for local causes, so in the absence of a 6th school they put in a team of swimmers not swimming for one of the 5 schools. A raffle including a signed Derby County shirt and funds raised from Spectators and Sponsors alike all contributed to the funds the club donated this year.
The Burton team’s support together with the those of the 5 competing schools allowed BASC to hand out £1,200 to nominated good causes put forward by the school’s taking part.
After some very competitive races the result was as below with a new name going on the trophy :-
Position | Team | Points |
---|---|---|
1st | Hilton | 130 |
2nd | William Shrewsbury | 97 |
3rd | Thomas Russell | 93 |
4th | St Wystan’s | 72 |
5th | Mosley | 67 |
For the first time we had an additional award for the school which showed the best sportsmanship and spirit on the night. Mosley became our first winners with the children and staff representing that school making so much noise throughout the evening.
The winning team came forward to accept the trophy of School Swimming Champions 2019.
The club look forward to hosting the event again in 2020.
