Wolverhampton SC Open Meet July 2019: Times and Report

Central Baths Leisure Centre, Wolverhampton – 13th & 14th July 2019

This weekend over 35 BASC swimmers attended the Wolverhampton SC Open Meet at the 8 lane Central Baths Leisure Centre Pool. This is always a highly competitive open meet, with many big clubs attending from Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire – this year being no different with many age groups containing numerous county finalists and regional swimmers.

The kids did the club proud – we won 30 medals, 86 PB swam, 50 County QT in our races this year. The gala was all based on age on the day – with kids who are born Mid July to September being in the older section of their swim peers this time around.

It was run with all HDW heats with the top 3 winning a medal this time.

Highlights included:-

• STAR SWIMMER – shared by Matt Gates and Georgia Ulyett – our leading medal winners over the 4 sessions with 7 and 4 between them.
• STAR RACE – Has to be 200m Freestyle swim by 9 year old Blythe Wroughton – a silver medal her reward for being brave and having a go at 8 lengths racing at such a young age.
• The 100m back race between Jack Ward and Matt Gates – with only 0.04 seconds between them at the end
• New qualifiers for Counties 2020 in Adam Doughty, Rachael Greener, Amelie Spiers, Harrison Jones and Dylan Mitchell – despite the Qualifying time in Staffordshire being significantly harder to achieve than those in Derbyshire we now have 23 swimmers with c100 QT for 2020
• Katie Spooner swimming a huge new PB in 200m IM
• Josh Cooper and Oliver Frost getting so close to the county QT in 200m Breast
• Some heats had 3 or 4 Burton Swimmers in the same heat – with some great races for our travelling supporters to cheer on

As always Simon and Ian advised and gave encouragement and great support to all kids – from all of the kids a massive thank you to all of you guys.

A huge thank you once again to Craig Day, Bev Doughty and Chris Greener who represented the Club as our officials over the 2 days.

We have now seen 36 different swimmers win at least one medal at an open in 2019 – with 165 medals won so far.
